Teacher Institute - Year 2

Our speaker series will provide multiple opportunities for teachers to engage with historians and scholars on a provocative topic of American history. Our annual Teacher Institute is designed to more deeply explore historical content through the use of new technologies and applications. Teachers work collaboratively to extend these strategies to their own classroom and instruction.

This year’s Teacher Institute is titled “Using Digital Technology to Teach Three Perspectives of the Civil War” and will be held from June 18-20, 2008 at the American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar in Richmond, Virginia. Each day will include seminar-style workshops with Civil War historians, laboratory setting workshops with technology tools and applications, and site visits to area historical sites and resources. All travel and lodging expenses are covered, and participating teachers will receive a $250 stipend. This institute is limited to 18 teachers.

Summer Field Experience - Year 2

The most immersive grant activity is the Summer Field Experience. This multi-day program is designed to provide teachers the opportunity to work closely with a lead historian in the exploration of a benchmark topic of American history. This process includes graduate level seminars with expert scholars, field work and site visits, and authentic research assignments.

This year’s Summer Field Experience is titled “The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and Citizenship” and will be held from June 23-27, 2008 at the Center for the Constitution at James Madison’s Montpelier in Orange, Virginia. All course materials and travel expenses are covered, and participating teachers will receive a $750 stipend. This institute is limited to 25 teachers.
